When my grandfather left his village in then Turkish Macedonia to avoid serving in the Turkish army against Greece, he put a handful of his native soil in a handkerchief in his pocket. He walked to Le Havre, France to board a ship to the United States. He never returned to Greece. When he passed away, my grandmother cleaned out his dresser and found the handkerchief.
