In the 4th century Christian Era, Hypatia of Alexandria, a renowned mathematician, scholar and teacher, defied the social norm that women learn quietness, modesty and live in submission to men. She studied conic curves and is believed to have discovered that the ellipse is the form that governs the motion of the planets. She wrote: “To understand the things that are at your door is the best preparation for understanding those things that lie beyond.”

An agnostic, she was murdered by Christian zealots.
