Migrations, 2001-2003

“Migrations”.

I attempted to merge references in family letters to crucial or pivotal moments in my parents migration from one locale to another with accounts of historical migrations (i.e.: the Diaspora within the Balkans in the 20th century), idealized and abstracted migrations (i.e. the Odyssey), and my own visual/ imagined ones.

I moved between drawings done on site, and a studio synthesis of images and notes made from the letters and fragments of various materials to create a suite of drawings, correlative objects and a video installation.

All of this attempted to locate, reconcile and honor the facts and visually meld the 'water stains of our memories' so they can serve as a catalyst to consider more recent migrations.
